Festival de l'Escaouette, Chéticamp (July 31 - August 3)

This is a big one this year. Chéticamp's Acadian music and culture festival is celebrating its 50th edition, with live music, kitchen parties, and family-friendly events running along the French Shore. It's about an hour and a half from Sydney, and the drive up the coast is a good excuse on its own. Pair the trip with a stop at the Cabot Trail if you want to make a full day of it.

The Barn Concert-Ceilidhs, Margaree (Weekly Through October)

If you haven't been to a ceilidh at The Barn on the grounds of the Normaway Inn, it's one of the best ways to experience Cape Breton's Celtic music scene. Shows run weekly through the summer and into October, with some of the island's best fiddlers and step dancers performing in a relaxed, informal setting. It's about an hour's drive from Sydney through the Margaree Valley, one of the prettiest routes on the island.

Fortress of Louisbourg

Not a single event, but always worth the drive in summer. The Fortress comes alive with costumed interpreters, cannon demonstrations, and daily programming that makes 18th-century Cape Breton feel real. It's an easy day trip from Sydney and a great option if you've got out-of-town visitors.
